Improved Data Modem (IDM-401) COTS Refresh To Provide Increased Capability to PEO Aviation Platforms

BOHEMIA, NY – March 2021 -- North Atlantic Industries, Inc. (NAI), a leading supplier of embedded systems, announced the availability of a technology refresh for the IDM-401 Circuit Card Assemblies (CCA) in 3U OpenVPX architecture. By migrating to current generation COTS hardware from NAI’s COSA® library, the refresh provides additional processing, I/O and communications density, and extra capacity for future requirements. NAI expects these improvements could satisfy tougher platform requirements for IDM hardware, software, firmware, and cybersecurity features.

“We have supplied nearly 3,000 sets of CCA’s over 10 years in support of PEO Aviation’s IDM-401 production requirements. As a forward-looking electronics company NAI has developed a significant technology refresh for the IDM-401,” said Lino Massafra, VP Sales & Marketing. “Our Configurable Open System Architecture (COSA®) allowed the natural progression from the IDM-401 COTS cPCI solution to a SOSA aligned COTS 3U OpenVPX updated IDM-401 solution.”

The IDM-401 configured with the new CCA’s consumes 75 W of total power and results in a 1.5 lb. weight reduction. Total 3U slots required is reduced from 7 to 4. The overall IDM-401 chassis outline design and dimensions are maintained. Three (3) Spare 3U OpenVPX slots offer expansion capability for additional IO, communications or video input/output!

Details of the upgraded IDM CCAs include multicore NXP PowerPC T2080 processing with expanded IO and communications support for 4 x 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet NIC ports, an increase of 2 additional ports over the existing IDM-401 to connect directly to additional subsystems. 2 x Programmable MIL-STD-1553 BC/RT/MT ports, 8 x Programmable ARINC-429/575 ports, 4 x Serial Communications Ports with ASK support for Combat Net Radio (CNR) capability. This adds an additional MIL-STD-1553 Redundant channel and adds ARINC-429 support. 24 x Programmable TTL I/O channels, and up to 15 ports of 10/100/1000 Base-T Layer 3 Ethernet managed switching. The updated CCA’s include a VITA 62, 28 VDC input Power Supply with up to 100 milliseconds of hold up time. All CCAs meet MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-810, including Apache Gun Fire vibration when installed in the IDM-401 chassis. Coupled with Wind River 653 3.x or DDC-I Deos DO-178C DAL A RTOS support makes the latest generation IDM-401 circuit cards the ideal COTS solution for future PEO Aviation requirements.
