North Atlantic Industries announces the release of latest generation IEEE 1394b (FireWire) Smart Communication Function Modules (FW1 and FW2)

BOHEMIA, NY – April 2020 -- North Atlantic Industries, Inc. (NAI), a leading supplier of embedded computing solutions and power supplies, announces the availability of the FW1 and FW2 IEEE 1394b (FireWire) smart communication function modules

The FW1 includes a Transceiver Line Interface Module (TLIM) for extended cabling up to 20 meters. The FW2 offers standard direct cabling up to 4.5 meters. Both modules provide a dual-channel triple port (per channel) IEEE 1394b communications interface. These communication function modules support device control and management via standard native OS (Linux) FireWire device driver.

IEEE 1394 is a high-speed serial bus interface standard that supports both asynchronous and isochronous communications and real-time data transfer. With common use applications such as human interface devices (e.g. multi-axis joysticks), propulsion controls and vehicle subsystem management, IEEE 1394 has extended this application base to supporting DOD aircraft, rotorcraft, naval and vehicle platforms requiring a reliable, high-capacity network carrying control information and sensor data between subsystems via local interconnection and communications backbones.

“The addition of the FW1 & FW2 communications modules supplements the wide array of NAI’s COSA® Architecture smart function support.” states Lino Massafra, VP of Sales and Marketing. “Providing an IEEE 1394 (FireWire) high speed serial bus interface solution expands NAI’s support for next generation aircraft such as JSF F-35 and other platforms integrated with the inter-systems communications standard.”

NAI is a leading independent supplier of embedded computing, Input/Output, communications, measurement, simulation, power and systems products for commercial, industrial and military applications built on a Configurable Open Systems Architecture™ (COSA®). COSA offers the greatest modularity, flexibility, adaptability and configurability in the industry that accelerates our customers’ time-to-mission. COSA supports a Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) that delivers the best of both worlds: custom solutions from COTS components with No NRE. For over 50 years, companies like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon have leveraged NAI’s capabilities to meet the demanding requirements of a wide range of processing, I/O and communication-centric applications, and do so with uncompromising quality, efficiency and responsiveness.
