NAI Launches CMH Combination Serial Communications and Differential I/O Function Module

BOHEMIA, NY – June 2025 -- North Atlantic Industries (NAI), a leader in rugged, modular embedded solutions for aerospace and defense, announces the release of the CMH Function Module. This newest addition to the Configurable Open Systems Architecture™ (COSA®) function module portfolio integrates serial communication and differential I/O capabilities into a single, smart function module solution designed for systems requiring reliable, multi-channel data communication and differential I/O processing in SWaP-constrained systems.

The CMH Function Module combines NAI’s proven SC3 Serial RS-232/422/485 Communications and DF1 Differential I/O functionalities in a single compact smart function module for applications requiring asynchronous serial communications and differential I/O with minimal function module SWaP footprint. It provides a 5-channel serial communications interface with one RS-232 channel supporting ASYNC communication with hardware flow control (TX/RX/CTS/RTS), and four RS-422/485 channels capable of ASYNC operation with differential signaling (TX±/RX±). Each channel’s baud rate is programmable up to 1 Mbps (250 kbps for RS-232), and the module includes 1 MB FIFO TX and RX buffers for each channel, optimizing data transfer efficiency. Built-in loopback testing ensures reliable diagnostics for mission-critical operations.

Additionally, the CMH function module features a 6-channel differential I/O interface. Each channel is configurable as an input or output, supporting differential RS-422485 signals, with user-selectable 120Ω input termination and surge protection. The CMH differential I/O section is provided with continuous built-in test (BIT), enhancing reliability in high-noise environments.

The CMH Function Module, with its advanced and integrated utility is ideal for applications in avionics, communications, control systems, and feedback loops. The module’s diagnostics, programmable I/O channels, and data-handling capabilities make it highly adaptable and reliable in the demanding environments of aerospace and defense.

“NAI’s CMH Function Module reflects our commitment to delivering configurable, flexible high-performance solutions for mission-critical applications,” said Lino Massafra, VP of Sales and Marketing at North Atlantic Industries. “By combining serial communications and differential I/O into a single, robust module, we’re enhancing versatility and simplifying system integration for our customers.”

The CMH Function Module is available now as part of NAI's COTS solutions portfolio. For more information or to request a demo, visit NAI’s website or contact NAI's sales team.
