BOHEMIA, NY – November 2022 -- North Atlantic Industries, Inc. (NAI), a leading supplier of embedded computing solutions and power supplies, announces the availability of the FW3 IEEE 1394b (FireWire) high-speed serial communications module with Mil1394 (AS5643) support.
The FW3 includes a Transceiver Line Interface Module (TLIM) for extended cable lengths up to 20 meters and provides a triple-node multi-port IEEE 1394b communications interface (configured as two nodes supporting 3-ports, and one node supporting 2-ports). This communication function module supports device control and management via New Wave Design & Verification (New Wave DV) Linux OS device driver. Contact NAI for other operating system support.
The FW3’s Mil1394 link-layer controller implementation uses the New Wave DV 1394b AS5643 hardware offload engine IP core. The link-layer controller offloads AS5643 defined Start of Frame (STOF) and Anonymous Subscriber Messaging (ASM) packet transmission and reception. “The hardware offload engine greatly reduces the CPU processing power and improves real-time requirements needed to service the FW3’s deterministic Mil1394 interface when compared with an industry standard 1394 Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) link-layer controller implementation.“, said Richard Mourn, New Wave DV 1394b Product Line Director.
Mil1394 has emerged as the high-speed deterministic interface of choice for military aerospace Vehicle System Networks. This aerospace and defense enhanced extension of 1394b has applications that have been applied to human interface devices (e.g. multi-axis joysticks), propulsion controls and vehicle subsystem management. Mil1394 has extended the 1394b application base to support DoD aircraft, rotorcraft, UAV, naval and vehicle platforms and serves to deliver a reliable, high-capacity network carrying control information and sensor data between subsystems via local interconnection and communications backbones.
“The addition of the FW3 communication module supplements the wide array of NAI’s COSA Architecture smart function support.” said Lino Massafra, VP of Sales and Marketing. “Providing an IEEE 1394 (FireWire) high-speed serial bus interface solution expands NAI’s support for next generation platforms integrated with the inter-systems communication standard.”

IEEE 1394 (FireWire)
NAI’s FireWire smart function modules provide IEEE 1394 (Firewire) high-speed serial communications. Two models are available from NAI and provide a direct PCIe interface to the local (on-board) processor, or, an external host processor for board platforms that support external PCIe connectivity. These module(s) are not supported with the classic memory register-based NAIBrd Software Support Kit (SSK) API libraries and support device control and management via standard native OS (Linux) FireWire device driver.
