BOHEMIA, NY – July 2026 -- North Atlantic Industries (NAI), a leader in rugged embedded computing solutions, announces the release of its 68PPC3A 3U OpenVPX™ Single Board Computer (SBC) - a SOSA™-aligned evolution of the company's field-proven 68PPC2 PowerPC platform. Building on a successful, widely deployed product line, the 68PPC3A advances NAI's PowerPC SBC family into the SOSA-aligned ecosystem while doubling onboard memory, expanding storage, and adding new security and system-management capabilities - all while preserving the PowerPC software investment customers have already made.
Like the proven platform it builds upon, the 68PPC3A is powered by the NXP® QorIQ® T2080 quad-core processor, ensuring continued PowerPC software compatibility and a low-risk upgrade path for programs already standardized on NAI's PowerPC SBCs. The next-generation design enhances the platform with up to 16 GB of DDR3L memory - twice the capacity of the prior generation - high-capacity solid-state storage, and SOSA-aligned data and control plane connectivity in a 3U OpenVPX form factor optimized for size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C). The result is a technology refresh that extends the life of existing PowerPC-based architectures while meeting the open-architecture requirements of today's modular systems, well suited for mission processing, communications, data management, and system control applications.
Engineered with NAI's Configurable Open Systems Architecture™ (COSA®), the 68PPC3A enables customers to tailor I/O capabilities to specific application requirements through an intelligent function module site. This COSA-based approach simplifies integration into new or existing systems while reducing the need for extensive hardware redesign and supporting rapid adaptation to changing application requirements - making the move from legacy platforms straightforward.
"The 68PPC3A is a deliberate next step for our PowerPC customers - it takes a proven, widely fielded platform and brings it into the SOSA™ aligned product families with more memory, more storage, and modern security, without forcing a costly software rewrite," said Lino Massafra, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at North Atlantic Industries. "Its SOSA™ alignment and COSA-based I/O flexibility simplify integration while providing a scalable platform for a wide range of mission-critical systems."
Reflecting its next-generation positioning, the 68PPC3A broadens operating system support well beyond the prior generation - including VxWorks®, Linux®, DDC-I Deos™, and Green Hills® INTEGRITY®-178 tuMP - and adds optional cybersecurity capabilities such as Secure Boot and crypto-key storage. Available in both commercial and rugged configurations, and supporting VITA 46.11 system management, the platform is designed to support demanding deployment environments across aerospace, defense, industrial, and transportation applications.
NAI offers a comprehensive line of adaptable, 3U cPCI, 3U and 6U VPX and 6U VME, rugged Single Board Computers (SBCs) specifically designed for harsh, SWaP-constrained environments in a range of demanding, embedded computing applications for the defense, commercial aerospace and industrial applications. These Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) and modified COTS SBCs are based on the latest Intel®, NXP® (PowerPC™), and ARM® Cortex®- A9 processors, each delivering unique advantages in deployed applications.
